A Mother's Prayer

I do not ask to always see your table spread each time
With crystal shining clear and pure upon white linens fine.

Though this is beauty much desired, I would rather see
Humble hearts surrounded there, giving thanks most reverently.

And though everyone admires, I know, a home immaculate and neat
For cleanliness is godliness, and renders blessings sweet.

Yet, when the need arises, may compassion fill your soul
To leave your task unfinished -- may you feel that you must go --

To help another spirit who is very much in need
Of soothing words that you could say -- or of your kindly deed.

It matters not if beds are spread with silks and satins rare
As long as little knees are taught to kneel to Him in prayer.

May simple everydayness wind joys around your heart
May your children feel contentment as your love to them imparts.

And when the dark clouds gather, for to each there comes this hour
May the priesthood be your refuge -- may your husband hold this power.

May you always walk beside him and be his cherished love,
And your joys be never-ending, as God has planned above.

If all these things, my daughter, you find that you can do
I'm sure a bit of heaven shall always dwell with you!
